2010-13: Computer-aided assessment of series of fundus photos for diabetic retinopathy.
Investigator Initiated Research
Inclusion open since 1-1-2011
One of the most common complications in Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is Diabetic Retinopathy (DR). The required regular DR-assessment by a retinaspecialist, based on fundus photos, is a labor-intensive process that puts a significant demand on the available health care. This will probably increase even further due to the expected increase of the number of diabetes patients. Computer-aided assessment offers a solution to this problem. The goal of this project is to develop a software application incorporating advanced image analysis and pattern recognition algorithms that aid the ophthalmologist in grading these images in a faster and better way, without compromising accuracy. Therefore, a longitudinal assessment approach is suggested: Fundus photos of a patient are compared to earlier photos of the same patient to assess the development of DR over time. This method focuses on differences between the new fundus photo and an earlier photo of that same patient.
