Confluence of drusen or hyperpigmentation may imply an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). A recent study of unilateral, peripheral laser coagulation showed that drusen regression in either the treated or the untreated eye occurred in half of the patients. Also, it has been suggested that complement factor H polymorphism may be a causal factor for about half of all AMD cases. We intend to assess the association between CFH Y402H polymorphism and the effect of laser treatment of drusen. This is a case control study among 14 patients who have been treated by unilateral laser coagulation (protocol 2002-15).
