2012-03: Combined Ophthalmic Research Rotterdam Biobank
Eye disorders with a severe visual outcome often have a genetic background. Although many causal genetic factors have been discovered over the past decade, a significant proportion of these disorders still have an unknown genetic etiology. Discovery of the genetic factors will help elucidate the etiology and create starting points for therapy. To investigate these factors, biomaterials including DNA from large groups of patients are needed. Joint efforts from The Rotterdam Eye Hospital and the Department of Ophthalmology, Erasmus MC, will make large scale collection of biomaterials feasible, and will create a repository which will facilitate future ophthalmic research. The purpose of this project is to create a biobank to facilitate future research aiming to elucidate the genetic background of monogenic and complex genetic ophthalmic disorders.
