Patients with macula-off detachment, often have co-existing cataract. Thus, the vitreoretinal surgeon is faced with the dilemma of whether to perform combined phacovitrectomy or opt for vitrectomy with sequential cataract surgery. There is no consensus as to which is best for the patient.

The objective is to answer the question: does combined versus sequential phacoemulsification cataract surgery, in macula-off retinal detachment surgery, by vitrectomy, affect the refractive outcome and the re-detachment rate after vitrectomy? In other words, is one better than the other, for the patient?
