The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation aims to design instrumentation and control techniques to improve the clinical outcome of surgical procedures for relevant and urgent vitreo-retinal conditions, in particular epiretinal membrane (ERM) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Essential for this type of procedures is to prevent unintended damage to the retina by small overshoots in instrument manipulation. For this purpose a fiber probe was integrated in an instrument connected to an intraoperative OCT system and algorithms were developed to estimate the distance to the retina.
The PRECEYES Surgical System allows the surgeon to perform standard manual surgery or to combine manual with robot-assisted (hybrid) surgery. During robot-assistance tremor filtering and movement scaling are pre-programmed. In this study, we will test the combined OCT-probe and robot system in patients scheduled for vitreoretinal surgery.
