2008-11: Delays in presentation of patients with retinal detachment to treatment centres: Comparison between different countries and health care systems.
Rhegmatogenous detachment usually starts locally in the retinal periphery but, in time, progresses to involve the macula. Functional outcome mainly depends on macular detachment. Strategies resulting in surgical repair before macular detachment occurs would be a major step forward. The aim of this study is 1st to establish, in patients undergoing retinal detachment repair, the time intervals between first complaints and successive visits to health care providers and to record how many patients have a macula on retinal detachment, and 2nd to elucidate whether patient related or care provider related factors are responsible for these intervals. Patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment due for surgery will be asked to fill in a self-developed and validated questionnaire. The study endpoints are:
1: the nterval between first complaints and presentation to health care providers.
2: description of the referral pathway.
3: percentage macula on/off.
