Inclusion open since 1-6-2009

The triaging system of the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department in the Eye Hospital Rotterdam differentiates between four colour codings to indicate the patients’ level of urgency: red, orange, yellow, green and blue. During night and weekend shifts, it is impossible to use this triaging system because of lack of qualified staff. Following a previous pilot study, this study will focus on development of a self-triage instrument to be used during the night and weekend shifts in the A&E department. The starting point for this instrument are a subjective vision score and an ophthalmic pain score in order to ensure that the most urgent disorders on the A&E department can be treated with priority by the ophthalmologist. This is a prospective cohort, non-intervention, study. Endpoint is defined as a self-triage instrument that will be validated for use in Ophthalmic and general A&E departments.
